Dick Morris: Obama's Afghan Deadline Big Mistake

By Jim Meyers   |   Thursday, 03 Dec 2009 07:43 PM

Veteran political analyst and best-selling author Dick Morris tells Newsmax that President Obama’s address at West Point Tuesday night was essentially an attempt to “cover his butt politically” regarding Afghanistan.

He also said that by setting a deadline for beginning to bring troops home from Afghanistan, Obama has likely doomed U.S. chances of achieving its goals there.

Newsmax.TV’s Ashley Martella asked Morris for his overall impression of Obama’s address.

“I thought he channeled George Bush,” Morris declared.

“It was like you were watching a younger version of President Bush up there, because I think Bush would have said just about exactly the same thing — with the exception of the fact that Bush would not have told our adversaries when we’re going to get out.

“The Taliban now have a choice. They can do the honorable thing, which is come out and fight, or they can do the right thing, which is hide for a year and a half until Obama goes home and then come out and fight. Which are they going to do?

“What I thought about the speech was, here he is speaking to an audience of cadets at West Point, and over their shoulders the rest of the country. And the job of a president at that point is to inspire the country, unite it, galvanize it for action, persuade the young men and women in the services that this is a cause worth fighting for, worth risking their lives for.

“But this was simply a president up there basically covering his butt politically. The whole thing was designed to try to pacify the left and have them excuse him for sending in the troops after he got elected as a peace candidate...

“Saying I’m going to go in in six months and then I’m going to come out in 18 months is hardly the summons to action that a president needs to send.”

Martella asked if the cadets in the audience appeared to be stirred or inspired by Obama’s speech.

“I saw two or three of them sleeping,” Morris responded.

“It’s a good thing they didn’t have an area mike or I would have heard the snoring.”

Asked if Obama has a lot at stake politically in Afghanistan, Morris replied: “Yes, a huge amount. He can fight on healthcare all day long, and the people he alienates on that are for the most part those who voted against him. Here [on Afghanistan], the people who agree with him, almost all of them didn’t vote for him. And the people that disagree with him, most of them voted for him.

“Therefore he’s really risking a lot by doing this. And I think the reason he is doing it is that it would be even worse for him to have scenes of the Taliban riding their tanks into Kabul and taking over the government. That would be such a graphic illustration of presidential weakness.

“I think this was the moment when his campaign rhetoric collided head to head with reality, and reality won.”
