USA Today/Gallup Poll: Toss Most Members of Congress

More than 60 percent of Americans believe that most members of Congress should get the boot, according to a new USA Today /Gallup Poll. And just 28 percent say most members deserve another term in office.

That’s the same level of discontent recorded in a poll last spring, before the fall election when Republicans won control of the House.

Republicans voters are significantly more dissatisfied with Congress than Democrats, the poll found. While 36 percent of Democrats said most members of Congress should be re-elected, just 26 percent of Republicans said members rated another term.

Among independents, 69 percent said it is time for most current members to get their walking papers.

The economy has most voters riled up, said John Pitney, a congressional scholar at Clarement McKenna College in California.

“The economy is still in touch shape, and if people read stories in the paper about Congress, words like ‘deadlock’ and ‘deficit’ come up,” Pitney told USA Today. “That’s not a recipe for a happy electorate.”
