Top Republican lawmakers and the Afghan ambassador to the United States are voicing opposition to President Barack Obama's intent to begin withdrawing troops from Afghanistan starting next year.

Sens. John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina say Obama's plan to start pulling out in July 2011 is a mistake and will embolden Taliban and al-Qaida extremists.

The lawmakers and the Afghan ambassador, Said Tayeb Jawad, say the withdrawal should be based on a conditions on the ground, rather than a fixed date.

McCain was on ABC's "This Week," Graham was on CBS' "Face the Nation" and Jawad appeared on CNN's "State of the Union."
