Obama to Meet With Jewish Members of Congress

Monday, 17 May 2010 08:51 PM

President Barack Obama is meeting with Jewish Democrats in Congress on Tuesday to discuss U.S.-Israeli relations.

The meeting, which the White House announced Monday, comes as U.S.-brokered peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians are resuming. That follows a diplomatic spat between the U.S. and Israel in March when an Israeli panel announced construction plans in contested east Jerusalem in the middle of a visit by Vice President Joe Biden.

Obama has faced some skepticism from the Jewish community over his commitment to Israel, although the president has reiterated his support for the country and for establishing an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

The president called the meeting, his first with Jewish Democratic lawmakers as a group.
