House Democrats have easily defeated a Republican attempt to roll back a major provision of the nation's new health care law requiring most people to get health insurance.

Republicans tried to amend a small business tax bill with a provision that would have eliminated the mandate. Republican Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan called the requirement "one of the most onerous provisions of the new health care law."

Democratic Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan said eliminating the mandate would add millions to the rolls of people who lack health insurance.

The vote Tuesday to repeal the mandate failed 187 to 230.
