Women in Congress Endorse Pelosi for Leader

Friday, 12 Nov 2010 10:12 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Thirty-one House women say Nancy Pelosi should keep her spot as Democratic leader in the next Congress.

In a letter to other members of the party's caucus Friday, the women lawmakers said Pelosi has borne the brunt of "unfair criticism and attacks." They said the party needs the Californian to fight against Republican attempts to roll back the health care overhaul and other measures.

The endorsement was touted by Pelosi's office after about two dozen Democrats voiced a preference for someone else to lead the party next year. No viable candidate has emerged.

Republicans won back control of Congress in the midterm elections. Both parties hold leadership elections when Congress returns for a lame duck session next week.
