Former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge said Friday that the Muslim Brotherhood will be restrained from too much influence in Egypt’s initial political transition because of the nation's military Tom, Ridge, egypt, Muslim, Brotherhoodforces, but he warned that what the radical Islamic group has been saying – and what it stands for – are “two different things.”

“Any time that the radicals can get a foothold – the amount of influence is to be determined – but obviously, that creates potentially a graver situation, and we need to be aware of it,” Ridge said in an interview with Fox News’ Stuart Varney.

“You know you are going to have, for the time being, an organization in Egypt [the military] that is very wary and concerned about the Muslim Brotherhood having too much influence,” he continued. “To the extent that the military provides a stability, and then they bring in the secular forces long term, it could end up being a better situation for America than it was with [President Hosni] Mubarak – but that really needs to be seen.”

As to the Muslim Brotherhood, Ridge said: “I think what they say, and what they are committed to, are probably two different things.”

“It’s been interesting listening to the language of their engagement in these protests, and you would get a sense from them, that they are interested in supporting a [smooth] transition to government,” Ridge said.

“But the type of government they want is probably dramatically different than what the secular protesters want, and I can’t believe that any group that takes a look at its neighbor, Israel, and would like to eliminate them – and really embraces the notion of Islamic jihad – should be considered anything other than a potential threat to the region or the United States.”
