Mitt Romney is trying to slow the advance of GOP presidential rival Newt Gingrich. Romney’s campaign and surrogates have unleashed a wide-ranging assault on the surging former Speaker of the House.

Former House colleagues and ad campaigns by Romney and a super PAC supporting him are being rolled out in an effort to take down the man who has recently rocketed ahead of Romney in Iowa and in other polls.

The Washington Post reported that the Romney campaign put together a conference call with the news media and with former Rep. James Talent and President George H.W. Bush chief of staff John Sununu to attack Gingrich.

“What we’re here to say — with reluctance, but clearly — is that he’s not a reliable and trusted conservative leader,” Talent said, according to the Post. “Because he’s not a reliable or trustworthy leader.”

Sununu added that Gingrich “is more concerned about Newt Gingrich than he is about conservative principle.”

CBS News reports that the Romney campaign launched a web attack ad Friday slamming Gingrich for calling Rep. Paul Ryan’s Medicare reform plan “right-wing social engineering.”

A super PAC supporting Romney has put together an ad attacking Gingrich for having "a ton of baggage." Restore Our Future hits Gingrich for ethics violations while Speaker, his positions on immigration and his work for Freddie Mac, CBS reported.
