Gov. Perry: Govt Can Only Assist Job Creation

Tuesday, 28 Jun 2011 05:36 AM

By Hiram Reisner

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says while government cannot create jobs, it can facilitate job creation. The potential presidential candidate also told Fox News’ Glenn Beck Monday individual states should be empowered to determine what practices they use to attract businesses.
“Actually what a government can do is create an environment where those jobs can be created,” said Perry, who is reportedly considering a 2012 presidential run. “Government does not create any jobs — they can actually run jobs away.”
Texas has created significantly more jobs than any other state since the recession purportedly ended in June 2009. According to the Dallas Federal Reserve, 37 percent of all net new American jobs were created in Texas through April 2011.

Beck cited a Time Magazine blog published Monday, which called Perry: “The master of the theater of job poaching,” indicating his business-attraction policies are stinging other states.
“Actually that’s what our Founding Fathers had in mind with the 10th Amendment,” Perry said, referring to the Constitutional amendment, which reserves to the states or the people all powers not delegated to the federal government.
“They said you guys [the states] go out there and compete — whoever can put the best environment together, the tax structure you are most comfortable with, the regulatory climate that is fair and predictable, the legal system that does not allow for over-suing, accountable public schools so that there is a skilled work force — then let’s see where everybody wants to live,” he said.
“And over the last decade, Texas has won that contest [with] pretty much not even a close second,” Perry said. “It’s really that competition, Glenn, that’s going to make America strong again — it’s the federal government kinda getting out of our hair, the idea that they’re telling us how to educate our children, or how to deliver healthcare, how to — for that matter — how to clean our air.”
Perry said for America to get back to a vibrant economy, the federal government should allow the states “to be the laboratories of innovation.”
“It’s how our Founding Fathers actually foresaw the country being competitive,” he said.
