Republicans are ahead in eight out of 10 competitive races for open House seats, according to a new poll by The Hill
. Add that to its poll last week showing that Republicans lead in 11 of 12 battleground districts represented by freshman Democrats, and it’s clear that Democrats are in deep doo-doo, to borrow President George H.W. Bush’s memorable phrase.
Many races are close, with 12 of the 22 falling within the margin of error, but Republicans still dominate.
“There are a couple of bright spots for Democrats, but you’re still seeing strong Republican performance across the country, no question about it,” says Democratic pollster Mark Penn of Penn Schoen Berland, which conducted the survey. Democrats suffer from the weak standing of the national party and President Obama, he notes.
