Poll: Approval Rating for Congress Matches Record Low

Polls showing the public’s antipathy toward Congress continue to mount. A new CBS News/New York Times survey shows that only 12 percent of Americans approve of the way Congress is doing its job, matching the October 2008 record low and down from 14 percent in August.

poll congrees new lowAs for parties, 63 percent disapprove of Democrats, compared to 28 percent who approve. When it comes to Republicans, 72 percent disapprove and 19 percent approve.

Only 6 percent of voters think most members of Congress deserve re-election -- the lowest level during the past 20 years of CBS News polls. And 84 percent say new members should be elected.

Voters are a little more generous toward their own representative, with 33 percent saying he/she deserves re-election and 57 percent saying no.
