House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., may be a strident liberal, but she’s also a realist. And she knows that the GOP now holds all the cards in the House. So Pelosi says Democrats will seek to cooperate with their Republican opponents in Congress when possible, The Hill reports
Areas of agreement could include job creation and deficit reduction, she says. "Democrats will strive to work with the new Republican majority to create jobs, strengthen the middle class and reduce the deficit," Pelosi writes in a USA Today op-ed piece.
"As we go forward, we welcome Republican ideas about job creation. … And we will always fight to protect Social Security and Medicare, health care reform and Wall Street reform." The odds for cooperation on healthcare and Wall Street reform are quite slim.
