Palin Tells Walters: I Read Newsmax, and I Can Beat Obama

Thursday, 09 Dec 2010 09:50 AM

Sarah Palin, the first person ever to score a three-peat on Barbara Walters’ annual list of her 10 most fascinating people, tells the heavy-hitting TV personality tonight that one of her top sources for reading is Newsmax.

During a 2008 interview, Palin declined to answer Katie Couric's question as to what she read regularly. Palin later said she was insulted when Couric asked whether she read newspapers, and declined to name any for her.

When Walters asks her the same question tonight, Palin tells the famed interviewer without blinking, "I read Newsmax and The Wall Street Journal. I read all of our local papers of course in Alaska because that's where my heart is.”

The revelation of Newsmax as a top source of news for 2012 presidential contender is not new. In November 2009, she told Fox News' Sean Hannity that Newsmax tops her reading list.

The monthly magazine also scooped all other media by featuring her on its cover and in a story in 2008 even before Sen. John McCain picked her as his running mate. She also dropped by the Newsmax offices in West Palm Beach, Fla., in October for a visit with Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy and to appear in a Newsmax webinar.

During the Walters interview tonight, Palin also says, “I'm reading the best book right now — Dean Karnazes's book about being an ultra-marathoner. I read a lot of C.S. Lewis when I want some divine inspiration.”

Asked about her presidential chances against President Barack Obama in 2012, she said she could beat him.

Those and other reflections of the former Republican vice-presidential candidate will be broadcast at 10 p.m. Eastern today during the "Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2010" on ABC. She also will address the plethora of rumors that have swirled about her as she has continued to develop political and personal clout as a tea party fave and a double-best-selling author who has her own reality TV show.

"There is a lot of B.S. out there,” Palin tells Walters. “I don't want to just believe that it comes with the territory, when you put yourself forward, in the name of public service, that you have to take that kind of garbage that's out there."

The eclectic list of folks who fascinate Walters this year includes The Situation and his cohorts on “Jersey Shore,” pre-teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, actress and new “American Idol” judge Jennifer Lopez, the energized bunny actress otherwise known as Betty White, and a few others we’ll leave for you to find out. If you live in Cleveland, you might not want to watch her interview with one of her selections — we won’t name names, because he’s taken enough Heat.
