Oprah to Obama's Rescue in California

Saturday, 02 Feb 2008 07:29 PM

She's Bara-a-a-ck -- and on a rescue mission to help win California for her main man, Sen. Barack Obama.

According to The New York Times, TV megastar Oprah Winfrey will headline a monster Los Angeles campaign rally on Sunday targeting California's women voters in a drive to close the gap between Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Obama among that crucial voting bloc.

Already credited with helping Obama win in Iowa and South Carolina, Obama hopes she'll pull a Golden State rabbit out of the hat and attract vast numbers of that state's women to his cause.

“I’ve been in contact with her consistently,” Obama told the Times, which has endorsed Clinton. Winfrey, he added is "open to helping out in any ways that she can.”

Speaking to reporters, Obama denied reports he was giving up on winning California's huge number of delegates, saying, “We’ll see. I don’t share that view,” while coyly failing to disclose Winfrey's key re-emergence in his campaign.

"I think this is going to be very competitive, but we’ve got 22 states,” Obama told the Times. “Just from a purely strategic perspective, I think everybody understands that if we are spending all of our time in one state and not spending time in the other 21, then that might not lead to the most delegates. And this is, frankly, a delegate race at this point.”
