President Barack Obama seems to be confused a bit about the distinction between Great Britain and England, the Heritage Foundation’s Nile Gardiner observes in his blog at The Foundry.

The president stumbled while talking during a news conference Tuesday about Iranian protesters’ storming the British Embassy in Tehran. Obama referred to the diplomatic outpost as the “English embassy” in Iran rather than its correct name, the British Embassy.

Story continues below the video.

“One can only imagine the kind of howls of derision that would greet any president contender if that kind of basic error were made before, say, the editorial board of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel,” wrote Gardiner, comparing the gaffe to Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain’s recent stumbles on the issue of Libya during an interview with the Wisconsin newspaper.

To be clear: England is part of Great Britain. Scotland and Wales make up the rest of island. But those territories are just part of the entire United Kingdom. Northern Ireland and several other small islands make up the rest of the UK.

During the news conference, Obama condemned the takeover of the British Embassy, but Gardiner notes he has been tardy in the past to criticize the Iranian government’s barbarous acts and has even extended his hand in friendship at times.

“This has been a presidency that has significantly downgraded traditional US alliances, from Britain and Israel to eastern and central Europe, while appeasing brutal enemies like Iran as well as strategic adversaries such as Russia,” Gardiner writes.
