National Political Committees Rack Up Debt

As the clock ticked down on the midterm elections, the Republican and Democratic National Committees racked up $30 million in debt, according to The Washington Post.  The newspaper’s column "The Fix" says that Federal Election Commission reports show that in the most recent reporting period the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee ended up with $19 million in debt and the National Republican Congressional Committee with $12 million in debt.

national, parties, debtAccording to the Post, the DNC managed to close out November with $9.7 million in the bank and the RNC $1.9 million. The Post added that the “meager cash total” may have an impact on Chairman Michael Steele’s (pictured) decision to see a second term as RNC chair.

The Post also notes that the FEC reports show the DCCC almost outspent the NRCC two-to-one, $55 million to $31 million, in its failed bid to hold on to congressional control.
