CONCORD, N.H. — Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell says Texas Gov. Rick Perry didn't give his best performance at last week's Republican presidential debate.

But McDonnell says people should cut Perry some slack.

Speaking to reporters outside a New Hampshire Republican Party fundraiser Monday night, McDonnell said Perry probably has the best job creation record in the nation. And he says the 2012 presidential race won't be decided by personality or a single debate.

He declined to endorse anyone and said he probably wouldn't do so until at least November.

McDonnell is considered a rising star in Republican politics and is often discussed as a potential vice presidential nominee. He took over as chairman of the Republican Governors Association last month after its former leader, Perry, stepped down to focus on his presidential run.
