U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham appears ready to praise the Lord and pass the ammunition regarding Iran and its nuclear arsenal. In fact, the South Carolina Republican told a Canadian forum Saturday that U.S. military action might be necessary to “neuter” Iran, according to The Blog Briefing Room at TheHill.com
Graham told participants in the Halifax International Security Forum that he believes a comprehensive strike would stop the regime from acquiring nuclear weapons.
“So my view of military force would be not to just neutralize their nuclear program . . . but to sink their navy, destroy their air force and deliver a decisive blow to the Revolutionary Guard," Graham said, according to TheHill. "In other words, neuter that regime.”
Graham’s comments provoked outrage among conference participants, according to the London Daily Mail
. Graham noted that, although international sanctions are beginning to work, President Barack Obama should make it “abundantly clear” that “all options are on the table,” the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.
Graham, who sits on both the Armed Services Committee and Homeland Security Committee and is a member of the Air Force Reserves, said: “If you take military action against Iran as the last effort to stop their nuclear ambitions, you do open up Pandora’s box. But if you let them acquire nuclear weapons, you’ll empty Pandora’s box.”
The Iranian government continues to maintain that its nuclear program is designed for energy production, but the United States and other nations counter that the regime intends to manufacture nuclear weapons. Its open threats against Israel also have caused alarm.
