Given the dominance of independents among New Hampshire voters, most pundits assume only a moderate can win the state’s Republican presidential primary. But that’s not the case, says former New Hampshire GOP Sen. John E. Sununu.

“Unfortunately, candidates and their consultants keep making the same mistake,” Sununu writes in
The Boston Globe. “They assume that all independents are bundled neatly together ideologically between Republicans and Democrats.”
But that’s not the case in the Granite State, Sununu points out.
“Independents have enthusiastically supported Ralph Nader, Dennis Kucinich, Pat Buchanan, and Ron Paul, among others,” Sununu notes.
“They show no reluctance to support candidates with strong ideological viewpoints, but are wary of candidates that appear to be creations of the established party monolith.”
