A group called The Republican Jewish Coalition has launched a nationwide robocall campaign strongly critical of President Barack Obama’s Mideast position. It tapped former Bush White House press secretary Ari Fleisher as a spokesman, the Washington Wire blog of The Wall Street Journal reports.

Barack Obama, Jewish, Republicans, robocallsThe coalition has placed 20,000 robocalls accusing the president of endangering Israel by advocating for a return to “physically indefensible” 1967 borders with the Palestinians.

The coalition also convene a telephone town hall featuring Fleisher, who told participants the Obama plan announced last month “abandons morality” and casts doubt on the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security.

Obama carried 78 percent of the Jewish vote in 2008, but the White House worries that his peace proposal could become a wedge issue that peels off Jewish support for his re-election.

Obama supporters insist the president was simply reiterating longstanding U.S. policy. But the proposal has exacerbated tensions with Israel’s ruling conservative coalition and angered some U.S. supporters of Israel.
