MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Republicans may be starting to choose with their heads as the Jan. 3 presidential caucuses approach.

The ascent of libertarian-leaning Ron Paul and the lack of an ideologically pure consensus conservative seem to be awakening a new sense of pragmatism in some caucus-goers.

That could bode well for Mitt Romney because since chunk of voters hasn't settled on a candidate to face President Barack Obama.

Interviews with Iowa political operatives and party activists — as well as internal polling by rival campaigns — suggest that some Iowans are increasingly concerned about Paul. His views often stray from GOP orthodoxy.

While votes are still to be cast, these people seem to be falling in line behind Romney instead of rivals seen as more conservative but weaker against Obama.
