INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma has adjourned the Indiana House until Monday, saying boycotting House Democrats told him they won't return to the Statehouse Thursday or Friday.
Bosma said he talked to House Minority Leader Patrick Bauer Thursday morning, and Bauer told him that Democrats have no intention of providing the quorum needed for House business this week.
Most Democrats have fled to an Illinois hotel in an effort to derail legislation they consider an assault on the working class. Their boycott complicates other bills, including the session's top priority — the budget. But Republicans said legislative deadlines could be extended.
Democrats say they won't come back until Republicans are willing to negotiate their agenda, while Republicans say they won't be bullied into dropping their proposals.
