Imus Thinks Stress May Have Brought On Cancer

Don Imus, who is now in Boston to host his annual St. Patrick's Day show the day after announcing he has prostate cancer, thinks he knows what what contributed to his condition: "I think it was all the stress that caused this," he said Monday on his talk show.

"I have great confidence in my doctors," Imus added, but there is one doctor who isn't so sure Imus is on the right track.

"I am very confident we have no studies that show that stress is the sole cause of cancer, but stress can interfere with a person's ability to deal with cancer," Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer at the American Cancer Society, told ABC News. "The only risk that stress plays, in my experience and in scientific literature, is it sometimes makes it more difficult for someone to deal with the disease and actually get good therapy for it."

Stage II cancers have not metastasized or spread to other parts of the body.

"The day you find out is fine," Imus said. "But the next morning when you get up, your knees are shaking. I didn't think I could make it to work."

After Imus' show aired, Entertainment Weekly reports that his spokesperson said Imus appreciates his fans' outpouring of good wishes: "After years at the Imus Ranch surrounded by inspirational children battling cancer, Don is well-prepared to fight this," his spokesperson said, referring to Imus' charity program. "And no, this does not make him eligible for the kids' rodeo competition."

Imus says he had spoken to politicians Rudolph Giuliani and John Kerry, who were both treated with prostate cancer.
