Hillary Way Ahead in Calif. Poll

By Newsmax Staff   |   Tuesday, 22 Jan 2008 09:53 AM

According to a new Field Poll of California voters, 39 percent of likely voters are leaning toward Hillary Clinton and 27 percent favor Barack Obama. Clinton is up three points and Obama is up five points since the last Field Poll a month ago.

Former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina is running a distant third at 10 percent.

According to a report in the San Diego Union Tribune, if Edwards were to drop out of the race before Feb. 5, it could help Obama. The Field Poll shows more than twice as many Edwards supporters would prefer Obama to Clinton.

The poll shows Clinton and Obama appeal to very different segments of the Democratic electorate, noted the report.

Clinton is strongest among women, Latinos, seniors, lower-income voters and less educated voters. Obama runs best among blacks, college graduates and upper-income voters.

Clinton leads 3-to-1 among Latinos; more than 2-to-1 among lower-and middle-income groups and nearly 2-to-1 among women. Obama has a better than 2-to-1 lead among blacks and a 7-point edge among both the upper income and college graduates.
