Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has praised Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama for his handling of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright controversy.

Appearing on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” on Thursday, Powell said some of the statements Rev. Wright has made are “deplorable” and stated:

"I think that Sen. Obama handled the issue well. He didn't look the other way. He didn't wait for the … storm to go over. He went on television and I thought gave a very, very thoughtful, direct speech. And he didn't abandon the minister who brought him closer to his faith."

In his televised speech, Obama sought to explain his relationship with Wright, the pastor of the church he has attended for many years, and why he could not end his close association with the minister despite his often inflammatory rhetoric.

Powell, a Republican, told ABC he is not yet endorsing a presidential candidate but is “looking at all three” — Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain.

"I know them all very, very well,” he added. “I consider myself a friend of each and every one of them. And I have not decided who I will vote for yet."
