New Documents Boost Egg-Price Fixing Lawsuit Claim

Monday, 12 Apr 2010 05:44 PM

Attorneys say egg buyers who filed an antitrust lawsuit alleging price-fixing in the egg industry now have documents from a one-time defendant supporting the claim.

Plaintiffs attorneys say the new documents from Sparboe Farms of Minnesota bolster allegations that United Egg Producers conspired with some of its members to artificially keep egg prices high.

The documents include memos from the trade group calling for production slowdowns to boost profits.

The class-action lawsuit on behalf of egg buyers nationwide alleges that as prices climbed between 2004 and 2008, industry officials were covering up an orchestrated hen kill-off to reduce supplies.

The suit is filed in U.S. District Court in Philadelphia.

Attorneys for the egg industry did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
