Georgia GOP Rep. Paul Broun is standing by the controversial tweet he sent Tuesday calling President Barack Obama a believer in socialism immediately after his State of the Union address. “Mr. President, you don’t believe in the Constitution. You believe in socialism,” Broun tweeted shortly after the conclusion of Obama’s address.

When CBSNews.com asked Broun about the comment on Wednesday, he replied: “I stick by that tweet.”

Broun agreed that it is important to use civil rhetoric. But he added: "There's a wide difference between the philosophy of the Democratic leadership . . . They believe the government should do everything for everybody and take care of every human endeavor . . . Republicans overwhelmingly believe in freedom [and] the free market.”

Broun’s office released a more formal reaction from the congressman to the president’s address.

Broun did not call Obama a socialist in that news release, but made his displeasure clear.

“The president’s proposal to freeze spending at record-high levels is unacceptable,” he said. “The American people deserve to have elected officials who aren’t afraid to make the tough decisions and get things done.
