Rep. Broun: Dems Exploiting Budget Crisis

Rep. Paul Broun, R-Ga., dismisses claims the GOP is split between tea party loyalists and its traditional leadership on spending cuts, saying it is the Democrats who are exploiting the nation’s budget crisis, because they believe shutting down the government will be politically advantageous.

broun, democrats, budget, crisis“The split is between the [GOP and the] Democrats who I believe are planning — and have been since the lame-duck session — to shut down the federal government for political purposes,” said Broun, who unveiled a website Tuesday, www.countdowntotheshutdown.com, which features a clock counting down to April 8 — the day the federal government will stop operating if Congress does not pass a budget for the rest of this fiscal year.

“In fact, they could have passed a long-term CR [continuing resolution] that would have taken us through this whole fiscal year, but [former House Speaker] Nancy Pelosi refused to do so,” Broun said Tuesday on MSNBC. “I think it’s their plan politically to shut down the government, so that they can [re-elect President] Barack Obama, put Nancy Pelosi back in the Speaker’s chair . . . so they can pass through their agenda — that’s killing jobs in America.

“And House Republicans are just proposing some actually meager cuts to begin this process. When you’re talking about a $3.8 trillion federal budget, cutting just $61 billion is just a pittance,” Broun added.

The Georgia conservative said Obama’s threat not to sign a budget bill that includes cuts to Planned Parenthood and National Public Radio is just a political ploy.

“We need to cut specific programs — we need to make major cuts,” Broun said. “We’re facing an economic emergency in America, and it is absolutely critical that we start sending power back to the states and the people.

“We are headed towards an economic collapse of America if we don’t stop this outrageous spending and borrowing that Nancy Pelosi, [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid, and Barack Obama have been doing,” he continued. “I'm willing to talk and compromise over which federal program we’re going to start cutting.

“But we’ve got to make major cuts — that's just the long and short of it — to create jobs in America and put us back on the right economic footing as a nation.”
