The stakes couldn’t be any higher for House Speaker John Boehner as he seeks to revise his debt/deficit bill that had to be dropped from a planned vote Thursday thanks to conservative opposition. The battle could define his tenure as speaker, Politico reports.

Boehner has shown calm amid the storms through his career. And that style, along with his consensual and inclusive manner may bring him success. But then again it may not as conservative GOP House members, particularly freshmen tea partyers, want to see more fire from the speaker.

He’s meeting with his caucus Friday morning to plot strategy. “This is the key week of Boehner’s speakership,” Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., told Politico. “It’s all on the line.”
