Iowa Straw Poll winner Rep. Michele Bachmann said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union” the American people will not back away from the tea party movement, even if members of the group have suffered in recent national polls, according to Politico
“Let me say what the tea party stands for: It stands for the fact that we’re taxed enough already — we shouldn’t spend more money than we’re already taking in. And, third, we should act within the Constitution," Bachmann told CNN’s Candy Crowley. “That’s a pretty mainstream agenda that most Democrats agree with.”
The leader of the House Tea Party Caucus also refuted claims the tea party movement is losing national momentum.
“I’m not seeing it at all,” she said. “I will tell you about concepts, as opposed to a term like the tea party: When you talk to people about concepts that the tea party stands for — which is really getting your financial house in order — that’s really what the tea party is about, people are there, that’s the zone there in.”
Bachmann also defended her opposition to the debt-reduction deal.
