Conservative author Ann Coulter takes The New York Times to task for knocking her in a review of a book about the 1989 rape of a jogger
in New York City’s Central Park, and the controversial trials that followed.
The Times reviewer wrote that "coarser pundits like Ann Coulter continue to exploit the case whenever possible." That was in reference to a chapter about the case from Coulter’s new book, “Demonic: How the Liberal Mob Is Endangering America,” that is critical of a retrial 13 years later that overturned the original convictions in the case.
Coulter charges that the retrial, based on a new confession and DNA evidence, was a media show perpetrated by the far left.
“Liberals despise the rule of law because it interferes with their ability to rule by mob,” Coulter wrote at HumanEvents.com
. “They love to portray themselves as the weak taking on the powerful. But it is the least powerful who suffer the most once the rule of law is gone.”
Coulter says the new confession was false, and came from someone already behind bars who had nothing to lose. Her supposed exploitation of the case stems from her following the facts, she wrote.
“You will note that [liberals] never ask: Who did what in this case?” she wrote. “All they want to know is which class of people are on trial. Social justice is the only justice that interests the Left because it's the only justice that can be delivered by the political agitation of a mob.”
