The trailer for the film “The Negotiator” has everything denizens of the multiplex have come to expect from a summer thriller preview — except the movie. The ominous voice-overs, quick cuts, and dire warnings are part of multimillion-dollar campaign against President Barack Obama from the conservative super PAC American Crossroads.
The opening scene, familiar to all moviegoers, is a takeoff on the announcement that the preview is appropriate for all audiences. Instead, it says, “The following preview is for a fake movie. The lack of presidential leadership is real.” It also notes the film has been rated BG, for big government.

The preview says the president would “say what it takes . . . to scare a nation” and takes on Obama’s warnings about food safety and healthcare. It also challenges the president’s recent comments in which he wondered aloud whether Republicans would “compromise their kids’ safety so that corporate jet owner continues to get a tax break.”
The preview ends with film credits proclaiming that the film is by “Zero Leadership Productions in association with Eternal Debt Features” instead of the usual listing of actors, producers, screenwriters, directors, grips, makeup artists, etc.
American Crossroads, formed in 2010 with the help of Bush guru Karl Rove and former Republican National Committee Chairman Ed Gillespie, produced the trailer as part of its multimillion-dollar campaign to unseat Obama and other Democrats. The group raised and spent $71 million last year and hopes to raise and spend $120 million on 2012 House, Senate, and the White House races.
