The campaign of Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is going hard after front-runner Mitt Romney in South Carolina for his previous support of abortion. The Gingrich campaign has sent a brochure
to homes in the state charging that “the record is clear: Massachusetts moderate Mitt Romney can’t be trusted to protect life.”
The first page of the flyer prominently displays a line of Romney’s from a 2002 gubernatorial debate in Massachusetts — “I will preserve and protect a woman’s right to choose and am devoted and dedicated to honoring my word in that regard.”
The second page is titled “Massachusetts Moderate Mitt Romney: A Pro-Abortion Record.”
Then comes a question: “What happened after Mitt Romney ‘changed’ his position from pro-abortion to pro-life?”
The answer comes from Romney’s record in office as governor, the mailer says. Romney
• “appointed a pro-abortion judge to the bench,
• “expanded access to abortion pills,
• “put Planned Parenthood on a state medical board, but failed to put a pro-life group on the same board, and
• “signed government mandated healthcare with taxpayer funded abortions.”
Gingrich’s campaign also has run television ads in South Carolina attacking Romney for his abortion flip-flop.
