A simple urine test may be soon able to predict whether people with Type 2 diabetes are likely to suffer mental declines as they age, new research suggests.

A team of researchers from Kaiser Permanente of Georgia, Emory School of Medicine, and the National Institute on Aging has reported discovering a protein detectable in the urine of patients with albuminuria — a common kidney complication linked to diabetes — that could be an early warning sign of cognitive decline in older diabetics.

ALERT: Reverse Type 2 Diabetes. New Strategies Show How.

The finding, detailed in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, could help doctors one day detect mental health issues early in their older diabetic patients, when treatment is most effective.

For the study, the researchers tracked nearly 3,000 older diabetic patients between 2003 and 2009 — measuring key aspects of cognitive function and the prevalence of albuminuria.

The results showed diabetics with albuminuria had a higher rate of mental declines, compared with those who did not have the condition.
