U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Geneva on Thursday to discuss Syria's chemical weapons, U.S. officials said.

Kerry said earlier on Tuesday that Lavrov was expected to send him Russia's proposals on securing Syria's chemical weapons for review by the Obama administration.

The announcement came as an emergency closed-door meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Syria was canceled after Russia withdrew its request for the session, Australia's U.N. envoy said on Tuesday.

The meeting was expected to focus on a Russian plan to place Syrian chemical weapons under international control, diplomats said on condition of anonymity.
