Debate moderator Bob Schieffer yielded most control early on in the contest to the candidates as he allowed them without interruption to discuss domestic policy at length.

Both President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney seemed comfortable trading rhetoric on domestic topics such as education, Romney’s Massachusetts record, the economy (by linking it loosely to foreign policy), and Medicaid, with Schieffer doing almost nothing to stop it. Schieffer at one point did acknowledge that the subject was foreign policy, but both candidates quickly pivoted back to domestic issues.

After several minutes, Schieffer finally got things back on topic by asking about Israel and Iran.
