The U.S. must make sure it backs the "right team" in any possible involvement in Syria, retired Air Force Lt. General Thomas McInerney warned Monday.

And that means avoiding the Supreme Military Council under Gen. Salim Idriss, which, he told Fox & Friends, is backed by the Muslim Brotherood.

"The team we want to back is under Colonel Riad (al-Asaad)," McInerney, a Fox News military analyst, said.

Shortly after McInerny made his remarks, CBS reported that Riad, founder of the rebel Free Syrian Army, had lost his leg when a bomb hit his car.

McInerney said the best way forward for American intervention in Syria would be to target airfields in a bid to cripple the Damascus government's "very formidable air defense system."
