Conservative commentator Mike Huckabee tells Newsmax.TV that Republicans who abandoned Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin following his controversial remarks about rape should “repent.”

Huckabee, who was one of the first prominent conservatives to voice his support for Akin hopes that fellow conservatives will “repent of their sins and will get back and help Todd Akin” before it’s too late.

“It’s interesting that he is, in some polls, leading and some he’s just barely behind within the margin of error and they’ve abandoned him,” said Huckabee on Wednesday. “They’ve got other Senate candidates that they’re pouring vast amounts of resources in that are far behind where Todd Akin is.”

Huckabee pointed to recent revelations that Akin’s opponent, incumbent Claire McCaskill, personally benefitted through her husband’s company from about $1 million in stimulus funds.

See the excerpt below of Mike Huckabee's interview with Newsmax:

He added that McCaskill’s husband received some $40 million in federal contracts in recent years.

“That could very well sink the ship of a person who already was on thin ice because of her vote for Obamacare,” he said. “That put it over the top — her chairing the stimulus committee funds, and her almost undying support of Barack Obama who’s not popular in Missouri at all.”

Given McCaskill’s track record as well as Akin’s repeated apologies for his comments, Huckabee believes it’s time for the Republican elite to reconsider.

“I’m still embarrassed and I’m still angry that a lot of the Republican elites decided to abandon Todd Akin for something he said in six seconds, for which he apologized and repudiated,” according to the former Arkansas governor. “We’ve got a record of Claire McCaskill for six years that we need to repudiate with the election of Todd Akin to be the senator.”
