Acerbic New York Times columnist
Maureen Dowd has ripped President Barack Obama, saying Russian President Vladimir Putin's deviousness has saved the commander in chief's political skin.
It was clear Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry were unable to convince Congress or the American public to bomb Syria over its use of chemical weapons, Dowd wrote.
So Putin artfully moved to neuter the administration's "huffing and puffing" that it was its threat of force that led to any breakthrough, Dowd said.
Putin made it clear that Obama would have to drop his bombing threats before any deal could proceed.
As a result, "The administration’s saber-rattling felt more like knees rattling. Oh, for the good old days when Obama was leading from behind. Now these guys are leading by slip-of-the-tongue."
She took the president to task for dithering on Syria, then failing to explain the stakes. Obama's ineptitude "escalated last August with a slip by the methodical wordsmith about 'a red line for us.'"
Dowd finishes, saying that "While most Americans shudder at the news that 400 children have been killed by a monster, they recoil at the Middle East now; they’ve had it with Shiites vs. Sunnis, with Alawites, and all the ancient hatreds."
