Sen. Bob Corker warned against "spiking the football" as Democratic and Republican senators neared an agreement on the budget and debt ceiling Tuesday.
In an interview with CNN, the Tennessee Republican voiced dismay with fellow Republicans who want to defund Obamacare at any cost. That effort had no chance of working from the get-go, he said.
"To be candid, it is an embarrassment that we have spent all this time on a rabbit trail leading us to where we are . . . We've wasted two months on something that wasn't going to happen," he said.
"What we could have been doing all this time is focusing on those mandatory changes that all of us know our country needs. We've blown that opportunity."
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, who was part of the interview with Corker, said she's more optimistic about the budget and debt ceiling negotiations now, The Hill reports
"Not to criticize anyone, but the adults have taken over, and people who know that we need to get this country back working again," the North Dakota Democrat said.
