Hillary Clinton: Zimmerman Verdict Brought 'Painful Heartache'

By Melanie Batley   |   Wednesday, 17 Jul 2013 09:39 AM

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton spoke Tuesday night about the "heartache" endured by Trayvon Martin's parents in the wake of accused killer George Zimmerman's acquittal, and said her prayers are with the family of the slain teenager.

Clinton's remarks at the 51st annual convention of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, the largest African-American women's organization in the country, marked the first time she has spoken out about the controversial Florida case, according to Politico.

Noting the "deep, painful heartache" felt by the Martin family and many across the country, Clinton said, "My prayers are with the Martin family and with every family who loves someone who is lost to violence. No mother, no father, should ever have to fear for their child walking down a street in the United States of America."

The acquittal of Zimmerman, a neighborhood-watch volunteer in Sanford, Fla., who shot and killed the black unarmed teenager, has sparked a national debate about racial profiling and so-called stand-your-ground laws.

The Justice Department would review the case, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday.

"Yesterday I know you heard from the attorney general about the next steps from the Justice Department and the need for a national dialogue," she said. "As we move forward, as we must, I hope this sisterhood will continue to be a force for justice and understanding," she said.

According to Politico, a 2016 Clinton run for the White House wasn't far from the thoughts of many of the 14,000 who heard her 30-minute speech. As she left the stage, Politico reported, many in the audience shouted, "Run, Hillary, Run!"
