For the moment Syria has made its way out of the headlines, and photos of children either tragically dead or gasping for air after chemical weapons assault are yesterday’s news.
If you listen to the voices of officialdom, an agreement was made to protect Syrians from the war crimes committed against them by their own government. Further, it will result in the removal of these weapons of mass destruction from the region.
By that narrative, the world again has been saved from the brink of destruction with plaudits to be given for the restraint of the United States and its leadership.
Stunning, however, is the silence of Europe. More stunning, is the thunderous silence of the American Congress — whose members are more worried about electability than with the moral issues that confront us as we witness Syria, a nation built on murders and destruction of its citizens, now appeased and able to do it all over again.
Little has been said about the refugees — in such numbers that they present the ability to destabilize America’s closest Islamic regional ally, Jordan — living outside of Syria.
In a region where stability is rare, except through dictatorship and where murder and its partner mayhem generally create the rules, Syria is simply a bad neighborhood.
Troubling most of all to people of faith ought to be that the power and the volume of the silence almost brought the Washington/Syria adventure to a full-scale geopolitical conflict.
The Abrahamic religions — Judaism, Christianity and Islam — all uphold the creation of life and monitor the honoring of this creation, this sanctification, of which the architect of the world manifested.
Not so in Syria, where people can be destroyed on whim and where holding onto power trumps all decency.
Worse still is that without Russian assistance, this immoral desecration of God’s creation would have continued. It is worth noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin informed the Americans that we were no longer the exceptional, the keepers of morality and those whose culture was created to honor and protect the sanctity of what the Heavens created.
He has, in fact, been telling us that for quite some time.
Let's not forget Putin’s nation waged war against its own people for centuries, killing millions with forced famines, and tens of thousands through its secret police. The nation wrote its history by enforcing the morality of Moscow, with death or destruction as the reward for anyone failing to follow.
This is not to suggest that this most extraordinary nation should have gone to war. Rather it is to suggest that Putin won not only the upper geopolitical hand but also the moral hand as well.
We live in a time when the world geopolitical system is returning to a new stability, as the Russians appear to be attempting again to reinstall the bipolar world system — us and them — that reduced conflict and kept stability through the threat of mutually assured destruction from 1945 through to 1989.
It is possible that the Russians are now back in power ready to assume the role again as partner in near war with the United States while guaranteeing global policing.
If that is to be the case, then it will be our system against theirs — again. And more Syrians will live in a world where human life is cheap, morality is sneered at by Europeans, and America is the world’s only hope.
