The year 2014 is still quite young. But if it is anything like 2013, the murders of Christians for doing little more than practicing their faith will likely at keep pace with last year’s abominations.
In the last days of December 2013, six Nigerian Christians are killed and 16 wounded by gunmen. In Baghdad, Christmas Day is celebrated by murderers who bomb a Catholic Church, killing 26 and wounding 38 in one incident. Not yet done with celebrating the day which many humans believe to be the date of the birth of the son of G-D, they struck also, targeting a market in a Christian neighborhood killing another 11 and wounding 21. In Syria, a church is shelled. In nations throughout Africa daily murders of Christians take place and the world yawns. In 2013, 83 Coptic Christians were sent to heaven by haters.
While the slaughter of Christians takes place, intellectual organizations find it far easier to condemn Israel, call for boycotts of the Jewish state, divestment, and sanctions. But nothing is said from the same groups of scholars about persecution and murder of Christians. The attack then is not just on Jews, on Israel, but on western religion by those who believe there is good reason to punish those who might believe in something greater than the genius of humans. Simply said: believe in the almighty and you’ll get what you deserve.
Truly religious people do not believe in hate, they believe in love. Truly decent people open their hospitals, their medical facilities and their discoveries to heal others, as the Israelis do daily, to all no matter their faith. Truly religious humans pray for peace, for hope, for joy in daily life. The Catholic Mass is a statement of divine presence, the Protestant service one of unity. And Islam provides the link to the prophets.
Maybe it is fairer to say that we close our minds off to this constant murdering, persecution, and destruction of Christians because it makes no sense. After all, who remembers the Tutsis and the Hutus or the Turks shooting the Armenians? This too shall pass, and we will bury the memory in our collectively ordered unconscious minds until they make as movie about it all.
But by watching and doing nothing, saying nothing, we are partners in death. We are telling the world that Americans love for religion is waning. When a child is gunned down on the way to mass, put your earbuds in. It will all go away.
The people killing Christians do it with such constancy that it seems to be sport. But they could not get away with it if the so called scholars who boycott and divest from Israel were as virulent in their hatred of those who slaughter the truly innocent, those of faith, for no other reason that those of faith desire that all mankind gets what it truly deserves. And that is peace. That is what we should be striving for as a species, but first we will have to speak out to stop the pain we deny when such lives are taken.
That is the trait that makes us different the killers. We believe in life. They don’t.
