The Supreme Court of El Salvador has ruled that a woman suffering from kidney failure and lupus may not have an abortion.

By a 3-2 vote, the court Wednesday rejected claims made by attorneys for the woman, known only by her first name, Beatriz, that going forward with the pregnancy would put her life at risk, according to Fox News.

The justices held that physical and psychological exams performed by the state-run Institute of Legal Medicine show that her health problems are under control and that she could continue the pregnancy.

El Salvador’s laws flatly prohibit abortion.

Feminist organizations have argued that the unborn child has little chance of surviving, and that forcing Beatriz to carry the pregnancy to term will put her life in jeopardy.

Abortion foes, including the Salvadoran Catholic Church, question her medical diagnosis and say the baby’s malformation should not result in a death sentence, according to The New York Times.
