What Are Allergies?

Tuesday, 07 Jun 2011 08:56 AM

Allergies are becoming increasingly common and so it has become more important to be aware of the common symptoms, causes, and types of allergies.

What are allergies?
An allergy is simply the result of hypersensitivity to an allergen, such as pollen, dust, or pet dander. Allergies may cause only mild discomfort, but can become severe if untreated.

Allergy symptoms:
Some common symptoms of an allergy include itchiness, eye redness, nasal congestion, rashes, hay fever, vomiting, and shortness of breath.

About allergies:
The most commonly reported types of allergies are respiratory, insect, pet, and food allergies.

What causes allergies?
Environmental factors such as dust, pollution, seasonal changes, animals, food, medication, age, gender, and genetics are the primary causes of allergies.

Food allergy:
A food allergy is caused by the presence of a certain protein in food items. These foods may include peanuts and other nuts, soya, fish, prawns, cheese, egg whites, and certain vegetables and fruits.

Cat allergy:
As its name suggests, this allergy is caused by allergens produced by cats. The glycoprotein present in the saliva and fur of cats is the allergy’s main cause. Male cats shed more fur and remain in the air for a long time. As a result, male cats may cause a more severe allergic reaction in some people.
