5 Weirdest Animals

Monday, 04 Oct 2010 11:10 AM

Strange and weird things always capture the attention of human beings, especially when it comes to weird animals. Several strange creatures have been spotted in all corners of the Earth. These weird animals are either born this way or created experimentally. In a news item broadcast on the BBC in 2004, a three-headed frog with six legs was reported to be spotted at a nursery in the U.K. The appearance of such a strange creature, according to a wildlife expert, could be due to environmental issues.

The strangest animals can also be the most interesting ones. So, let us take a look at five of the weirdest animals found on the Earth:

1) Liger: As the name suggests, a liger is a cross between a male lion and a female tiger. The liger is considered the largest animal among the cat family. A liger has the characteristic stripes of a tiger on the typical tawny fur of a lion. Interestingly, when white tigers and lions mate, the outcome is white ligers. It may be noted that ligers are different from tiglons, as the latter are a cross between a male tiger and a female lion.

2) Pygmy Marmosets: These weird animals, which measure between 12 and 15 cm, are the smallest monkeys in the world. However, their tail measures anywhere between 17 and 23 cm. These primates weigh approximately 125 g and move around on four feet. They are very alert and have thick, tawny fur. They make trees their home. Pygmy marmosets have long incisors, which they use to nibble tree trunks for sap.

3) Leafy Sea Dragon: Though this is an animal, it looks more like a flower or a weed when floating on the water. A leafy sea dragon has a multitude of colors all over its body, like gold, yellow, and green and is quite impossible to be noticed when it is swimming in the water. A closer look  reveals its eyes and fins. This leaf-like animal has no teeth and stomach. Its only diet is the mysidopsis shrimp.

4) Axolotl: Axolotl, with the scientific name “Ambystoma mexicanum,” is a variety of salamander found in Mexico. This animal can easily be considered one of the ugliest animals. It has a remarkable capacity to shed body parts when injured and then regenerate them. Though it lives in water, it can manage to live on land for short durations. Axolotls, during their infancy, exhibit cannibalistic tendencies and need to be kept apart from one another.

5) Komondor Dog: Komondor is a hunting dog found in Hungary. It has a thick, furry coat with long noodle-like, curly hair. On average, the male Komondor measures 27 inches, while the female may measure slightly less. The Komondor is suitable for hunting because it is agile, alert, and fearless; it is trusted by farmers to take care of their livestock. Though this dog is hairy, it sheds little hair. Nevertheless, the Komondor is indeed one of the weirdest  animals.

Apart from these five weird animals, there are thousands of other weird species on Earth. Some of them that may capture the attention of readers are the Angora rabbit, Dumbo octopus, Tapir, Star-nosed Mole, and many more!
