There are over 200 recognized colleges and universities in the southern state of Tennessee. There are institutions that offer technical studies including engineering and nursing, along with liberal arts colleges. Some of these schools are ranked among the best colleges in the country.

In the latest edition of the southern region ranking of the best colleges, Milligan was ranked at the 10th position by U.S. News & World Report. Its ranking is the highest in the state of Tennessee. The school is a liberal arts college with a Christian affiliation that boasts of a unique and well sought-after Humanities program.

In its latest edition, the U.S. News & World Report has ranked Bryan College at the sixteenth position among the southern region's best colleges. It offers degrees in eighteen major subjects and began its first graduate program, Master of Business Administration, in 2006.
  1. King College, a private institution founded in 1867, follows a semester-based academic calendar and has been modeled as a small university. The U.S. News and World Report, in its southern region list of the best colleges, has ranked King College at the nineteenth position, the third highest for those based in Tennessee. It is also one of the best colleges in Tennessee for nursing and engineering. Its degrees include a Master's of Nursing, and Bachelor's in Technology.
  1. Founded in 1857, Tennessee Wesleyan College is also one of the best colleges in the state. U.S. News & World Report ranks it at number twenty-nine. It is a baccalaureate institution that boasts of small classes that enable better individual attention to students. It is known as one of the best colleges in Tennessee for nursing, liberal arts, business, and teaching education.
