The best way to choose swimwear when you have a petite build is to first shop by body shape, and then by size. Certain styles of swimwear look great on petite women with hourglass figures, but look awful on petite women who have few curves. Let's take a look at styles that flatter each body shape of those with petite builds.

Hourglass
If you have a petite build, and an hourglass shaped body, you are short, your bust and hips are proportional in width, and your waist is smaller than both. You are fortunate, in that most swimwear styles will look flattering on you. So choose one that accentuates your best features. For example, you might choose a halter-style top with extra lift to accentuate your bust line, and low-cut bikini style bottoms to draw attention to your trim waste.

Pear and Inverted Triangle Shaped Petites
If you are heavier on the top or bottom, you'll want to choose swimwear styles that help balance your figure. Inverted triangle shaped petites should choose tops that offer full support without adding extra material, and bottoms that accentuate the waist and create a fuller look at the hip, to balance out the look of their figure.

Pear shaped petites should do just the opposite, for the same reason: to balance out the look of their figure. Petite builds with pear shaped bodies should choose swimwear tops that offer extra padding and draw the eye up, and bottoms that are a darker, solid color, and don't draw the eye down.

Lean and Apple Shaped Petites
Women with a petite build and lean or apple shaped bodies can follow much of the same advice when choosing swimwear. In order to create the illusion of a waist, both should choose styles that create the look of a waist. Apple shaped petites, for example, can create the look of a flattering waist with swimwear tops that feature empire waists and free floating material, and bottoms with high leg cuts to elongate the leg.

Lean shaped petites can create the look of a waist with swimwear tops that are padded and enhance the bust, and bottoms with wide, vertically hip sections to create the illusion of full hips. For example, try hipsters with bows or other embellishments on the sides.
