Stephen Colbert Launches Colbert Super PAC

Friday, 01 Jul 2011 11:32 AM

Comedian and one time rumored presidential candidate Stephen Colbert has just been given the green light from the Federal Election Commission to produce and air political advertisements.

Called the “Colbert Super PAC,” or political action committee, these ads will be created through Comedy Central parent company Viacom’s resources without being considered an in-kind contribution to a candidate from the company.

Colbert’s super PAC began as a parody of Republican presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty but will now include other presidential hopefuls.

In an attempt to satirize the politics of campaign contributions, Colbert joked, "I don't accept the status quo; I do accept Visa, Mastercard, or American Express."
