Five Best Sleeping Tips for Teens

Wednesday, 22 Sep 2010 10:40 AM

Getting a good night’s sleep is tough for many teenagers. However, for a healthy body and mind, it is important to get enough sleep. Following certain sleeping tips will help teenagers sleep well. A few tips for teens include creating a comfortable sleep environment, establishing a sleep routine, and avoiding caffeine throughout the later part of the day.

The following are sleeping tips for teens:

Establish and follow a consistent sleep routine
The first and foremost sleeping tip for teens is to establish and follow a consistent sleep routine. To adhere to this schedule, the teen should adopt the practice of waking up at the same time every morning, even on days that they do not have to go to school. This method will eventually help teenagers go to sleep at the same time every night.

Avoid playing video games and watching TV
Teens should avoid playing video games and watching television right before bedtime. They should find other ways to relax.

Read, write, or take a bath to relax
Reading a book, taking a bath, or writing in a journal are a few ways to unwind. These methods can help teens ease into sleep.

Schedule homework in early evening hours
Teens should try to schedule their homework early in the evening. This will ensure that their work does not have to cut into their sleeping schedule. Most teenagers need at least nine hours of sleep every night.

Initially it might be difficult for teens to fall sleep early. A teenager’s body clock is often set to staying up late and waking up late. Teens should work to reset their body clock by going to sleep at a reasonable hour.

The bedroom should be dark and quiet
Another helpful sleeping tip is to make the bedroom dark and quiet. This will trick the body clock into thinking that it is late.

There are other methods that can be used to help teens get a better night's sleep. If a teen has trouble keeping their room dark, they can use a sleep mask to cover their eyes. If they are a light sleeper and small noises tend to disrupt their sleep, they should try using a white noise machine or switch off the fan in the bedroom. Switching off the television and radio while sleeping will help the teenager sleep better.
